Halfmoon man arrested for driving with 17 license suspensions

HALFMOON — A Cohoes man was arrested Thursday night after police discovered he was driving with 17 license suspensions during a traffic stop for speeding on U.S. Route 9.

Rodney M. Smith, 29, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the 1st degree, a class E felony, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.

The traffic stop occurred at 10:24 p.m. when deputies pulled Smith over for exceeding the speed limit.

During the investigation, authorities determined Smith was operating a vehicle with 17 suspensions for failure to answer, imposed on 10 separate dates.

Under New York law, driving with 10 or more suspensions imposed on at least 10 separate dates constitutes aggravated unlicensed operation in the 1st degree.

Smith was also cited for speeding, an infraction.

He was released on appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in Halfmoon Town Court at a later date.
