PORTLAND — Maine State Police responded to a vehicle fire on I-95 in Portland near the Falmouth line Wednesday, April 16, at approximately 1:58 p.m.

A trooper noticed the fire in the northbound lane at mile 51.5.

Initial investigation indicates a silver Kia sedan was traveling northbound when it experienced a mechanical failure, causing a fluid leak that ignited.

The driver escaped the vehicle safely before it became fully engulfed in flames.

Portland Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.

The car was declared a total loss.

The Maine Turnpike was reduced to one lane in the area for approximately one hour while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Southern Maine Towing removed the vehicle from the scene.
