New Bedford man arrested after downtown stabbing

NEW BEDFORD — A 46-year-old man was arrested following a stabbing incident at the intersection of Elm Street and Purchase Street in downtown New Bedford on Wednesday.

Dennis Hart, of 423 Dartmouth Street, was taken into custody at the Serta bus terminal shortly after the incident, according to police.

Officers responded to reports of a stabbing victim around the Elm and Purchase Street intersection on April 16.

Upon arrival, they found an adult male with a severe laceration to his arm and two other minor wounds.

The suspect had fled the scene, but Officer Jenny Roman located Hart at the bus terminal where he was arrested without incident.

Hart was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Police officials noted that Hart is currently on probation out of New Bedford District Court and has an extensive criminal history with 43 adult arraignments.

His previous convictions include distribution of class B substance, assault and battery, malicious destruction of property, intimidation, and strangulation.

The victim is expected to recover from his injuries, according to authorities.

Officer Jenna Touchette was credited as the arresting officer in the case.
