Kingston man charged with attempted assault, strangulation after domestic incident

KINGSTON — Detectives from the Kingston Police Department arrested Jeffery Roberts, 36, on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges following a domestic violence incident on April 15.

Roberts faces two counts of attempted assault in the second degree, one count of attempted strangulation in the second degree, four counts of criminal contempt in the first degree, five counts of criminal contempt in the second degree, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Police responded to an apartment on Wall Street at approximately 5:25 p.m. after receiving a report of a violation of a full stay away order of protection.

Upon arrival, detectives found Roberts inside the residence of the protected party.

Further investigation revealed Roberts allegedly placed a leather belt around the neck of one of the children and attempted to lift the child off the ground.

Authorities said Roberts also subjected the protected party and children to physical contact during the dispute.

Roberts was processed and held for arraignment before being remanded to the Ulster County Jail with bail.

The incident remains under investigation.
