WEBSTER — Webster police arrested a Providence man Sunday night after he allegedly assaulted a woman with a knife and stole her vehicle from an apartment on Prospect Street.

Officers assigned to the evening shift responded at approximately 8:09 p.m. to a reported disturbance involving a knife.

Police identified the suspect as Lamech Cotton, 36.

According to police, Cotton threatened the victim with a knife, held it to her face, and struck her with the flat side of the blade until it broke.

While the victim attempted to escape, Cotton allegedly slapped her and punched her multiple times.
Neighbors intervened, pulling Cotton off the victim, police said.

Cotton then stole the victim’s vehicle and fled the area.

The victim sustained injuries to her face and was treated by Webster EMS.

Several hours later, officers were assisting the victim at the Webster Police Station when Cotton returned to Prospect Street in the stolen vehicle.

Officers Brooks and Collins encountered Cotton, who ran and attempted to escape by jumping over a fence before tripping on the ground.

Police apprehended Cotton and placed him under arrest.

Cotton faces charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (knife), larceny of a motor vehicle, assault and battery on a family or household member, and witness intimidation.

He also had an outstanding warrant for fugitive from justice on a court warrant and assault and battery on a family or household member.
