JAY — State Police arrested Philip A. Renderer, 48, of Upper Jay, on April 12 following a two-car accident and subsequent incidents in the town of Jay.

At approximately 5:56 p.m. that day, Troopers responded to a report of an injury crash at the intersection of State Route 86 and State Route 9N.

Before Troopers arrived, they learned that a black 2014 Volkswagen had left the scene.

An investigation determined that the Volkswagen, traveling east on State Route 86, failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a white 2005 Ford pickup truck.

The pickup truck was driven by Eleri J. Smith, 42, of Upper Jay.

After the crash, the Volkswagen fled but later veered off the road and crashed again further along State Route 9N.

The driver of the Volkswagen was identified as Renderer.

Smith was medically evaluated at the scene and was not transported to the hospital.

While interviewing Renderer, Troopers observed signs of impairment.

Renderer was transported to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

While at the hospital, he became combative with hospital staff.

After being medically evaluated by a doctor, Renderer was released.

Police then arrested Renderer on charges including third-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, and driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction within the last 10 years.

He was also issued vehicle and traffic tickets.

Renderer was taken to SP Ray Brook for processing and held in the Essex County jail for a pre-arraignment hold.

On April 13, he was arraigned in the Town of Jay and released on his own recognizance.
