Brattleboro police make multiple arrests during April sweep

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Police Department reported several arrests between April 10 and April 14, following various incidents across the city.

On April 10, officers on patrol encountered Debra Bemis, 51, of Brattleboro, on Elliot Street.

Police determined Bemis had multiple extraditable arrest warrants from New Hampshire.

She was arrested as a fugitive from justice and held at the Brattleboro Police Department in lieu of $15,000 bail.

Bemis is scheduled to appear in Windham County Superior Court on April 11.

Later that day, at approximately 5:53 p.m., officers responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident on Marlboro Road.

After an investigation, Swetha Varadarajan, 33, of Carol Stream, was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Varadarajan was issued a citation and released.

Varadarajan is scheduled to appear in Windham County Superior Court on May 27.

Following a March 24 fraud complaint, police arrested Alexis Montoya, 30, of Brattleboro, on April 11 for false pretenses.

Montoya was issued a citation to appear in Windham County Superior Court on May 27.

On April 11, officers conducted a motor vehicle stop on Fort Bridgeman Road.

Charles Bolte, 52, of Vernon, was arrested after police determined he was operating a vehicle in violation of conditions of release.

Bolte was cited and released.

He is scheduled to appear in Windham County Superior Court on May 27.

On April 12, officers attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop on Oak Street.

The operator failed to stop and fled.

The vehicle was later located on Route 30 by Vermont State Police.

After investigation, Nicholas Dow, 34, of Wilmington, was identified as the operator and arrested for eluding a police officer while operating in a grossly negligent manner.

Dow was transported to the Vermont State Police Westminster Barracks and cited by Brattleboro Police.

Dow is scheduled to appear in Windham County Superior Court on April 14.

On April 13, officers responded to a trespassing complaint at Hannaford.

Justin Clough, 45, of Brattleboro, was arrested for unlawful mischief, violation of conditions of release, and disorderly conduct.

Clough was cited and released.

He is scheduled to appear in Windham County Superior Court on April 14.

On April 14, officers on patrol encountered Betty Bashaw, 58, of Brattleboro, on Flat Street.

Bashaw was found to have an extraditable arrest warrant from New Hampshire.

She was arrested as a fugitive from justice and held in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Bashaw is scheduled to appear in Windham County Superior Court on April 15.

All individuals arrested or cited by police are presumed innocent until convicted in court.
