BOSTON — An off-duty Boston police officer intervened during an attempted robbery at a Washington Street store, leading to the arrest of a 36-year-old Dorchester man who allegedly threatened the officer with a hammer.
Ricardo Montero was arrested around 11:35 a.m. Sunday, April 13, after officers from District C-11 responded to a larceny in progress at 451 Washington Street.
According to police, the off-duty officer was inside the store when he observed the suspect stealing merchandise.
The officer identified himself and ordered Montero to drop the items, but the suspect allegedly refused and pulled out a hammer from his waistband.
Police say the officer quickly disarmed Montero, who then fled the scene.
Responding officers located the suspect walking rapidly down Washington Street before turning onto Algonquin Street.
When officers attempted to detain him, Montero allegedly tensed his body, pulled away from officers and resisted their commands before being placed in handcuffs.
All stolen items, valued at approximately $553, were recovered.
Montero faces charges of armed robbery and resisting arrest, and is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
