COLCHESTER — A Milton man was arrested Sunday evening after assaulting a police officer and attempting to gain control of the officer’s taser during a foot pursuit.
Around 6:45 p.m., a Colchester police officer spotted a vehicle at the Maplefields convenience store on Roosevelt Highway that was associated with a wanted person.
The officer confirmed the wanted male was in the car and attempted to detain him.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Joshua Burgess of Milton, fled on foot towards Lower Mountain View Drive and was caught by the officer after a brief pursuit.
Burgess physically resisted arrest and assaulted the officer in the process.
During the struggle, Burgess attempted to gain control of the officer’s taser, causing the cartridges to discharge.
A second Colchester Police Department officer arrived on scene, and Burgess was taken into custody after being pepper sprayed.
Authorities said Burgess had two in-state arrest warrants for numerous felony and misdemeanor charges with bail set at $5,000 and $200.
He now faces additional criminal charges including aggravated assault, impeding public officers, and resisting arrest.
Burgess was lodged at the Northwest Correctional Facility and is expected to appear in court on April 14.
The officer involved sustained minor injuries.
