MONTICELLO — New York State Police responded to reports of shots fired at the Evergreen Apartment Complex on Evergreen Drive in Monticello Thursday at approximately 3:05 p.m.
The incident began when a Dollar General employee at 18 Forestburgh Rd. contacted local police about a shoplifting incident.
Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputies monitoring radio traffic located an individual matching the suspect’s description near the apartment complex.
The suspect, later identified as Markell D. Jarrette, 29, of Monticello, began removing clothing items and fled on foot when deputies approached.
During the pursuit, Jarrette allegedly produced a firearm and discharged it toward a Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputy.
A deputy returned fire, striking Jarrette, who continued to flee before surrendering.
Jarrette was taken into custody by a New York State Trooper and Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputies, and a firearm was recovered at the scene.
After receiving medical treatment at the scene, Jarrette was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center in Wallkill, where he was treated and released.
Jarrette was subsequently arrested and charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.
Following arraignment in Monticello Court, Jarrette was remanded to Sullivan County Jail with bail set at $500,000 cash or $1 million bond.
He is scheduled to reappear in court on April 14 at 9 a.m.
