EDEN — The Vermont State Police has determined that a 78-year-old man shot and killed his wife before taking his own life at their residence on Rt. 100.
Autopsies completed Thursday at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington identified the deceased as David Buchanon, 78, and his wife Karol Buchanon, 70.
Karol Buchanon’s death has been ruled a homicide due to a gunshot wound to the head, while David Buchanon’s death has been ruled a suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The bodies were discovered Wednesday after law enforcement received a 911 call at 2:09 p.m. reporting two deceased individuals in the home.
Deputies from the Lamoille County Sheriff Department and a State Fish and Wildlife Warden initially responded to the scene.
The Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Crime Scene Search Team, Field Force Division and Victim Services Unit are involved in the investigation.
The Lamoille County State Attorney is also assisting with the case.
State Police detectives continue to investigate and will forward their findings to the Lamoille County State’s Attorney for review when complete.
