Mount Vernon man faces drug charges after foot chase

MOUNT VERNON — A 40-year-old Mount Vernon man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly fleeing police during a narcotics enforcement operation Thursday.

Members of Troop K’s Community Stabilization Unit, working with the Mount Vernon Police Department, observed Horace Hammonds conducting what appeared to be drug transactions in the Union Avenue area around 11 a.m., according to police.

When officers approached, Hammonds reportedly fled on foot, leading to a brief pursuit before he was taken into custody without incident.

Authorities charged Hammonds with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a B felony, and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree, a C felony.

Additional charges include criminal sale of a controlled substance in the fifth degree and tampering with physical evidence, both E felonies.

Hammonds also faces misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration in the second degree.

He was being held at the Mount Vernon Police Department awaiting arraignment.
