SARATOGA — A 37-year-old man was fatally shot by law enforcement Thursday morning after he aimed what appeared to be a handgun at officers during a standoff at an apartment complex, authorities said.

Brandon R. Moore was killed after he exited his barricaded apartment around 10:37 a.m. with what investigators later determined was a CO2-powered BB pistol.

The incident began at approximately 8:53 a.m. when State Troopers and Saratoga County Deputies responded to a report of a physical domestic dispute at the Ellsworth Apartment Complex.

Upon arrival at about 9:04 a.m., Moore refused to cooperate and barricaded himself in his apartment, according to police.

Law enforcement was advised that Moore might have access to firearms in the unit.

While attempting negotiations, Moore exited the apartment with what appeared to be a handgun.

Officers instructed Moore to drop the weapon, but he refused to follow multiple commands and aimed the weapon at State Police members and Deputies, at which time they fired their department-issued firearms, fatally striking him.

Two Troopers sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Investigators later determined that the weapon displayed by Moore was a CO2-powered BB pistol, which was loaded at the time of the incident.

Building #2 of the Ellsworth apartment complex was evacuated as a precaution when law enforcement arrived, prior to the shooting.

The incident was complicated by a sprinkler system activation in the building, which has made it uninhabitable and will require flooding mitigation to an unknown number of apartments.

The Attorney General’s Office has been notified and responded to the scene.
