HYANNIS — A 37-year-old Hyannis man was sentenced to 19-20 years in state prison for kidnapping and assaulting a 24-year-old victim in 2022, according to the Barnstable Police Department.
Anthony Russ received the sentence in Barnstable Superior Court on Friday, April 11, following his conviction on multiple charges including kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, larceny from a person, and witness intimidation.
The conviction came after a three-week jury trial that concluded on April 7.
According to police, the incident began around 10 p.m. on June 30, 2022, when Russ assaulted the victim in Hyannis.
Investigators said Russ beat the victim, blindfolded them, and zip-tied their hands behind their back before placing them in a car trunk.
Russ later moved the victim to the basement of a nearby house where he assaulted them with a large kitchen knife, police reported.
The victim was eventually released with threats of further harm if they reported the incident.
The crime was reported to Barnstable Police on July 1, 2022, leading to an investigation by the department’s Detective Unit with assistance from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, Massachusetts State Police, and Yarmouth Police Department.
Russ was arrested by members of the Barnstable Police Department and Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement SWAT Team on July 1, 2022.
In addition to the prison sentence, Russ will serve three years of probation upon release.
