HINGHAM — A 50-year-old Weymouth man is facing charges after allegedly vandalizing a Tesla in a shopping center parking lot, police said.
On April 1, the owner of a 2021 Tesla Model Y reported to police that his vehicle had been scratched along the driver’s side while parked at the Derby Street Shops earlier that day.
The Tesla owner, who had activated the car’s onboard security system due to concerns about previous Tesla vandalism incidents, provided police with video footage of the incident.
The security video showed a man parking near the Tesla, then walking past the vehicle with an object in his hand and scratching, or “keying,” the driver’s side as he passed by.
Hingham police investigators identified the suspect following an investigation.
The Weymouth man is being summonsed to Hingham District Court on a charge of vandalizing/defacing property.
His arraignment date has not been set, and police are not releasing his name because he has not been arrested or arraigned.
