HANSON — Authorities from the Hanson and Whitman Police Departments responded Monday to a social media-based threat directed at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School.

At approximately 1 p.m. April 7, the Federal Bureau of Investigation alerted Hanson Police to an unspecified threat on social media, considered a potential safety risk to the school.

Hanson Police promptly informed the school district, initiating an investigation.

As a precautionary measure, the school imposed a Stay Put Order to facilitate the investigation process.

Police and school administrators from both towns collaborated to identify the student believed to have made the threat.

The student was identified and interviewed, and police quickly determined there was no actual threat to students or staff.

The student will face disciplinary action according to the District’s student code of conduct.

The Stay Put Order was lifted at about 1:25 p.m.

Hanson Police Department continues to investigate the incident.

Officials from the Hanson and Whitman Police Departments and the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District are urging families to remind students of the risks associated with irresponsible social media usage.

“Students need to be mindful when using social media that platforms are monitored, and their words can be taken out of context and cause alarm,” Superintendent Jeffrey Szymaniak said.
