CLIFTON PARK — A Schenectady man was arrested Friday on charges stemming from a March incident where he allegedly fled from police and violated an order of protection.
Matthew J. Cotton, 41, was charged with criminal contempt in the 1st degree, a class E felony, and unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the 3rd degree, a class A misdemeanor, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.
The charges relate to an incident that occurred on March 5 on Longkill Road in Clifton Park.
Authorities allege Cotton fled from police in a motor vehicle in a reckless manner, exceeding the speed limit by more than 25 mph after being directed to stop by a marked police vehicle with activated emergency lights.
Cotton was also charged with violating a court order of protection by sending text messages to a protected person.
The contempt charge was elevated to a felony due to a previous criminal contempt conviction within the past five years.
Following his arrest on a warrant issued by Clifton Park Town Court, Cotton was arraigned before Judge Ellwood A. Sloat Jr. in Malta Town Court.
He was remanded to the Saratoga County Jail pending further proceedings in Clifton Park Town Court.
