SCHENECTADY — Police have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the abandonment of an injured dog found by good Samaritans last month.

Basean D. Brooks of Schenectady was arrested on April 4 at 3 p.m. and charged with animal cruelty under New York State Agriculture and Markets Law.

According to police, Brooks is accused of walking the female dog, named “Lavender,” to the area of McClellan Street and Eastern Parkway and abandoning her while she was injured.

Lavender was discovered on March 29 at 8 p.m. suffering from severe injuries to her head and face.

Schenectady Police Animal Control responded to a city residence on March 30 after the individuals who found the dog called for assistance.

The injured animal was immediately transported to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, where she continues to receive care.

Police say the investigation into what caused Lavender’s injuries remains ongoing.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Detective Division at 518-382-5245 or the Tips Line at 518-788-6566.
