ESSEX — A driver who allegedly “rolled coal” on protesters outside the Town of Essex main offices has been cited by police.
On Thursday, April 3, at approximately 5:45 p.m., an Essex Police officer observed a red pickup truck drive past 81 Main Street in Essex Junction and accelerate quickly, causing the vehicle to emit black smoke from its exhaust.
The smoke covered several people who were participating in a peaceful protest outside the municipal building, creating a nuisance, according to police.
The officer initially attempted to locate the truck but was unsuccessful.
Later that evening, the officer found both the truck and its owner, who admitted to the actions, police said.
The male driver was issued court diversion paperwork.
The case remains under investigation by the Essex Police Department.
