UTICA — A 41-year-old Utica woman faces multiple charges after allegedly stealing a purse containing credit cards and personal items from the 1100 block of Schuyler Street.

Police responded to the theft report on March 16 after the victim reported her purse had been stolen.

Investigators determined the suspect attempted to use the victim’s identification to purchase cigarettes at a nearby convenience store but was turned away when the store clerk noticed the photo on the ID didn’t match the person presenting it.

The Criminal Investigations Division developed a suspect during their investigation.

Days after the initial theft, the victim encountered the suspect near the same store, and following an altercation, managed to recover some of her stolen property.

On April 2, police located and arrested Fonta Young, charging her with two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and petit larceny.
