OWEGO — A deer jumped from a railroad overpass and narrowly missed striking a vehicle on North Avenue Wednesday morning, according to Owego Police.
Officers responded to North Avenue and Fox Street around 10 a.m. on March 26 for an animal complaint.
The driver told police a deer “flew out of the sky” and landed in front of his vehicle as he was traveling southbound on North Avenue under the railroad overpass.
A passerby confirmed the account, police said.
Investigation revealed dog tracks in fresh snow, indicating a dog had chased the deer, causing it to jump over the overpass railing onto the roadway below.
Police reminded residents that village code requires dogs to be leashed.
The incident was among 169 calls for service handled by the Owego Police Department during the week of March 24 through March 30.
During that period, officers made six arrests, responded to three motor vehicle accidents and issued seven traffic tickets.
Among those arrested was Todd W. Evans, 46, of Owego, charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and improper use of farm plates following a traffic stop on Armstrong Place.
Kevin A. Botsford, 44, of Owego, was arrested twice during the week — once for aggravated unlicensed operation and inadequate muffler, and later on a warrant from Johnson City Police for petit larceny.
