HERKIMER — A registered sex offender was arrested Friday on charges of raping a child under 13, according to the Herkimer Police Department.
Ronald Nichols, 46, of Herkimer, was charged with first-degree rape, a class B felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
The charges stem from a 2023 incident in which Nichols, a Level 2 sex offender, allegedly had sexual intercourse with a female under the age of 13.
Police said the arrest followed a lengthy investigation.
Nichols was arraigned and remanded to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail, $150,000 bond or $300,000 surety bond.
The Herkimer Police Department was assisted in the investigation by the Herkimer County Child Protective Services and the Herkimer County Children’s Advocacy Center, which is operated by the YWCA.
