GOUVERNEUR — An investigation has revealed that a murder-suicide claimed the lives of an elderly couple at their Fox Farm Road residence, according to New York State Police.
Sheila M. Van Norton, 66, and Thomas H. Van Norton, 68, both of Gouverneur, were found deceased inside their home after troopers responded to a welfare check at approximately 8:56 p.m. on March 26.
Autopsies performed March 27 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital by Forensic Pathologist Dr. Scott F. LaPoint determined Sheila Van Norton died from a gunshot wound to the head, with the manner of death ruled a homicide.
Thomas Van Norton’s death was determined to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and ruled a suicide.
State Police executed multiple search warrants and processed the scene to gather evidence following the discovery of the bodies.
The investigation involved the Troop B Forensic Investigation Unit with assistance from the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office and the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities have stated that this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
