Elmira man arrested for cashing forged check

ELMIRA — The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 51-year-old Elmira man for allegedly cashing a stolen and forged check.

Richard J. Hagenow was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, a class D felony.

The investigation began in March 2023 when the sheriff’s office road patrol looked into a forged check case before turning it over to the Criminal Investigation Division.

Investigators determined that on March 27, 2023, at about 12:05 p.m., Hagenow allegedly possessed a stolen and forged personal check belonging to someone who did not know him.

Hagenow allegedly cashed the check for $800 at the Community Bank in Elmira.

Following his arrest, Hagenow was arraigned in the City of Elmira Court and remanded to the Chemung County Jail without bail.

He is scheduled to appear in the City of Elmira Court at a later date.
