South Berwick man arrested in girlfriend’s shooting death

SOUTH BERWICK — Maine State Police arrested a 43-year-old man on murder charges Wednesday following the death of his girlfriend from a gunshot wound to the head.

Jeremiah Godfrey was taken into custody at approximately 12:00 p.m. in South Berwick and transported to York County Jail.

The arrest came after Godfrey called 911 on March 22 at approximately 8:44 p.m., reporting a domestic dispute with shots fired at 48 Brattle Street.

During the call, Godfrey told dispatchers he had an argument with his girlfriend, Sherri Sweet, 37, and described a struggle over a gun that resulted in Sweet sustaining a gunshot wound.

First responders arrived at the scene and provided medical assistance before transporting Sweet to Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Sweet was pronounced dead on March 23 at 10:15 p.m.

The New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on March 24, determining the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was homicide.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-South obtained a warrant for murder on March 26 before making the arrest.

Multiple agencies assisted with the investigation, including the South Berwick Police Department, York Ambulance rescue personnel, South Berwick Fire Department, Elliot Police Department, North Berwick Police Department, and Berwick Police Department.
