PORTSMOUTH — A Northwood man faces a felony assault charge following an altercation that began over a shopping cart at a local supermarket last month.
Michael M. Mbwana turned himself in to police on March 25 after an investigation into the Feb. 27 incident at Market Basket on Lafayette Road, according to Portsmouth Police Chief Mark Newport.
Officers responded to the supermarket at approximately 10:40 a.m. on Feb. 27 for a reported assault.
Police determined that a disturbance involving multiple people began over a shopping cart in the parking lot and escalated into an alleged assault.
One person was transported from the scene to Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Following an investigation, police developed probable cause to charge Mbwana with one count of second-degree assault, a Class B felony.
After turning himself in, Mbwana was initially held without bail at Rockingham County Jail due to the nature of the offense.
He was arraigned on March 26 and subsequently released on personal recognizance bail.
