NEWBURY — Newbury Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of a suspicious item, possibly a tampered-with firework or pipe bomb, found in a parking lot outside a commercial building Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, March 26, at 10 a.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to 19 Central St., Byfield, where the suspicious item was discovered on the ground in the parking lot.

The building, located in front of Pearson Plaza, was immediately evacuated and the area secured.

The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.

As a precautionary measure, the item was removed from the area and transported to the Martin H. Burns Wildlife Management Area in Newbury, where it was safely destroyed.

Officials confirmed there is no threat to public safety.
