TROY, NY — A Troy man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a September 2024 shooting outside a local bar that left one person seriously injured.
Shateik J. Merritt, 40, was arraigned on charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon after being extradited from New Jersey on March 21.
Troy Police detectives took Merritt into custody after he was apprehended by members of the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force on March 14.
The shooting occurred during the overnight hours on September 29 outside the El Dorado bar on 4th Street in Troy.
Police said the victim was seriously injured when the suspect fled the area after the shooting.
Detectives worked with the Capital Region Crime Analysis Center to identify Merritt as the suspect, and an indictment warrant was issued in November 2024 after the case was presented to a grand jury.
Investigators determined Merritt had fled the Capital Region, prompting a nationwide search that eventually led to his capture in New Jersey.
Merritt was remanded to the Rensselaer County Jail following his arraignment.
The Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office will oversee prosecution of the case.
Police said the investigation was supported by the NYS DCJS Gun Involved Violence Elimination Initiative, which provides resources to help communities reduce violent crime.
