NEWBURGH — City of Newburgh detectives arrested a 34-year-old local resident Thursday in connection with a homicide that occurred last summer.
Qaadir J. Smith was taken into custody on March 20 for the June 6, 2024, shooting in the area of 7 Monument Street.
The incident resulted in the death of a 26-year-old Newburgh resident who suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
A second victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury in the same incident.
Smith faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
The arrest follows what officials described as an intensive investigation by the City of Newburgh Detective Division.
The U.S. Marshals Service, Orange County District Attorney’s office, and Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center provided assistance throughout the investigation.
Smith is currently being held pending arraignment in City Court.
