NEWPORT — A Newport man faces assault and reckless endangerment charges after allegedly choking a woman and accidentally discharging a firearm in his home, police said.
Matthew Payne, 51, was arrested Monday morning after multiple Newport Police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic incident with a gunshot at a Short Spring Street residence.
Officers established a perimeter around the home until Payne walked outside.
During their investigation, police determined Payne had choked a woman and accidentally fired a handgun before their arrival.
Police recovered the firearm and found a bullet hole in the ceiling of the residence.
Payne was arraigned Monday in Orleans Criminal Court on charges of first-degree aggravated domestic assault and reckless endangerment.
He was ordered held without bail.
