MAMAKATING — A head-on collision on State Route 17 left one person dead and another injured Saturday evening near Exit 113 in the town of Mamakating.
According to State Police Wurtsboro, the crash occurred at approximately 5:19 p.m. when a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter Van traveling westbound crossed the center median and entered the eastbound lane.
The van, driven by Robert Cromer, 62, of Liberty, struck a 2021 Hyundai head-on, causing both vehicles to hit the southern guardrail before coming to a stop.
Jose A. Santiago Jr., 65, of Washingtonville, who was driving the Hyundai, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger, Blanca I. Santiago, 64, also of Washingtonville, was transported to Garnet Medical Center Middletown where she remains in stable condition.
Cromer sustained minor injuries and was evaluated at the scene before being released.
The investigation remains ongoing, and State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to contact SP Wurtsboro BCI at 845-888-2681.
