RED HOOK — A school resource officer’s quick action saved a choking student during lunch at Linden Avenue Middle School on Thursday.
Officer David Schmitz observed a student in distress while monitoring the cafeteria at approximately 12:11 p.m. on March 20.
Recognizing the child was choking, Schmitz immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully clearing the 12-year-old sixth-grader’s obstructed airway.
The boy was evaluated at the school nurse’s office following the incident, with no further medical treatment required.
The Red Hook Police Department credited Schmitz’s swift response with preventing what could have been a serious emergency.
