MIDDLETOWN — Detectives from the Newport Police Vice and Narcotics Unit arrested two men on drug charges Thursday after a suspect attempted to flee and crashed into parked vehicles at a local convenience store.

Kolby McCoy, 25, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, was identified as a suspect in an investigation into crack cocaine distribution in Newport.

On March 20, detectives obtained information that McCoy would be traveling to the 7-11 located at 29 Memorial Boulevard to distribute crack cocaine.

After obtaining a search warrant for McCoy’s vehicle, detectives set up surveillance in the parking lot.

At about 12:45 p.m., when McCoy arrived at the location, marked Newport Police vehicles and detectives moved in behind his vehicle.

As uniformed officers approached, McCoy attempted to flee, colliding with two parked vehicles before getting his vehicle stuck on a wood pile.

McCoy then exited his vehicle and tried to escape on foot but was quickly apprehended.

Also in the vehicle was Jacques Jeanty, 21, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, who was taken into custody without incident.

McCoy faces charges of possession with intent to deliver Schedule I/II substances, controlled substance conspiracy, reckless driving and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty.

Jeanty was charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver Schedule I/II substances and controlled substance conspiracy.

Both men were held overnight at the Newport Police Station and are scheduled for arraignment in Newport District Court on March 22.

One of the parked vehicles was occupied at the time of the collision, but no injuries were reported.
