AUBURN — A man was arrested after allegedly stealing more than $3,000 from his grandmother through unauthorized CashApp transfers linked to her bank account, police said.

Adam Birtwell was charged with multiple felonies including grand larceny and identity theft following the March 19 incident on N. Hoopes Avenue.

Police responded to a residence after receiving a fraud complaint and discovered Birtwell had been transferring money from his grandmother’s account without permission since November 2024.

The unauthorized transfers totaled approximately $3,111.71 over several months, according to investigators.

Authorities said Birtwell attempted to transfer an additional $4,192.30 on March 19, but the transaction was stopped when his grandmother received a text alert.

The victim visited her bank, where the ongoing theft was confirmed.

While in custody at the Auburn Police Department, Birtwell allegedly slipped out of his handcuffs and attempted to escape the building before being stopped by officers.

Birtwell faces charges including third-degree grand larceny, first-degree identity theft, attempted grand larceny, attempted identity theft, unlawful possession of personal identification information, and third-degree escape.

He was processed and transported to the Cayuga County Jail pending arraignment.
