EAST WINDSOR — A bicyclist died Wednesday after being struck head-on by a van on South Main Street, police said.
The crash occurred around 4:24 p.m. near 262 South Main Street (Route 5) when a northbound Chevy van hit a bicyclist who was riding southbound on the shoulder of the northbound lane.
The bicyclist, identified as Samalier Rivera-Tirado, 32, of East Windsor, suffered serious injuries at the scene.
Emergency personnel from East Windsor Police Department, Warehouse Point Fire Department and East Windsor Ambulance immediately began life-saving measures.
Rivera-Tirado was transported to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:40 p.m., according to police.
The driver of the van, Waldemar Serrano-Acevedo, 34, of Springfield, Mass., remained at the scene and failed field sobriety tests administered by officers.
Serrano-Acevedo was arrested and is being held on $1 million bond with multiple charges.
Police closed South Main Street in both directions from Abbe Road to Scantic Road while the Metro Traffic Reconstruction Unit investigated the crash.
