NEW BOSTON — The New Boston Police Department has issued a warning about a resurgence of the “Grandchild/Grandparent Scam” after receiving a new report of the fraud scheme.
The scam involves callers identifying themselves as attorneys who claim the victim’s grandchild has been in a serious car accident, arrested, and needs bail money for release.
Police say scammers sometimes impersonate the grandchild or present themselves as a friend helping an attorney, and typically insist on a “gag order” to prevent victims from discussing the situation with others.
Investigators have traced these calls to centers in Canada and the Dominican Republic.
In May 2024, New Boston police obtained an arrest warrant for Oumar Diallo, who was subsequently arrested in Redondo Beach, California.
Diallo is accused of defrauding a New Boston resident while posing as a bail agent in this scam.
Authorities believe Diallo, who allegedly committed similar offenses in Bedford and Lyndeborough in April 2023 collecting approximately $70,000 in cash, is connected to a Canadian call center.
He remains incarcerated at the Hillsborough County House of Corrections.
On March 5, a federal indictment was unsealed in Burlington for individuals identified from a Canadian call center.
Despite ongoing investigations and arrests, police warn that others continue targeting the lifetime savings of elderly residents.
New Boston police urge residents to call the department to verify any information if they receive suspicious calls and to share this warning with friends and family who may not use social media.
