CRANSTON — A homeless man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly attempting to break into a home and then stabbing the homeowner multiple times on Aldrich Avenue, police said.

Devan Tallo, 32, was taken into custody around 12:06 p.m. after officers responded to a 911 call reporting a stabbing in progress.

Upon arrival, officers found Tallo being restrained by two men with a large butcher knife nearby, according to Cranston Police Chief Michael J. Winquist.

The male victim was found on the ground with stab wounds to his neck and abdomen and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

Police said Tallo initially resisted arrest, requiring officers to deploy a taser before he could be handcuffed.

According to investigators, the incident began when Tallo attempted to enter the victim’s home while the homeowner and his daughter were inside.

Tallo was later seen collecting aluminum cans from trash behind the residence, which led to a confrontation with the homeowner.

The verbal dispute continued as both men walked along Aldrich Avenue before Tallo allegedly produced a butcher knife and stabbed the victim four times.

Two nearby workers who witnessed the attack intervened, disarming and restraining Tallo until police arrived.

Tallo, who was treated at a hospital for a hand laceration, faces charges including felony assault with a dangerous weapon, attempted breaking and entering, possession of a knife over 3 inches while committing a violent crime, and resisting arrest.

He will also face proceedings for violating bail conditions from a 2020 felony assault case and probation violation from a 2023 simple assault on a police officer.
