EAST AURORA — A 19-year-old Orchard Park man faces multiple charges after leading police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds over 90 mph with headlights off, authorities said.
Tyler J. Smith was charged with unlawful fleeing a police officer, a class A misdemeanor, reckless driving, and 19 other vehicle and traffic law infractions.
The incident began Saturday, March 15, at 9:51 p.m. when East Aurora police officers observed a gray Toyota sedan traveling at high speed northbound on Transit Road in the town of Aurora.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle near the intersection of Transit Road and Quaker Road, but the driver failed to comply.
The Toyota left the roadway near the intersection, striking two road signs before re-entering the road.
While turning right onto Quaker Road, the vehicle struck another car traveling west, police said.
The driver continued eastbound toward the Village of East Aurora at speeds exceeding 90 mph with headlights off.
Police terminated the pursuit for safety reasons before reaching the village after identifying the vehicle’s New York State license plate.
Following an investigation, East Aurora police identified Smith as the driver.
Smith was processed at the East Aurora Police Department and released on an appearance ticket to appear in Town of Aurora Court at a later date.
