ISLAND POND –– Congressional Representative Becca Balint held a well-attended Q&A session in Island Pond on Monday at noon. The event allowed Balint to update the community on developments in Washington, discuss how they impact Vermonters, and listen to local concerns.

Balint opened the meeting with a brief personal biography, mentioning her background in Windham County and experience teaching in four rural schools. She humorously compared teaching middle school to serving in Congress. Balint emphasized her role representing all Vermonters, regardless of party affiliation.

Balint discussed several national issues, raising concerns over President Trump’s economic campaign promises, including improving housing, lowering prescription drug prices, and capping credit card interest rates, noting these topics have been largely absent from recent statements.

She expressed concern regarding potential executive overreach, particularly referencing actions taken without congressional approval, and suggested greater scrutiny of Pentagon spending.

Balint also expressed concerns about Elon Musk’s influence in government due to his leadership role with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), citing potential conflicts of interest related to his private companies. She specifically mentioned a lack of transparency with DOGE and Musk’s refusal to testify before Congress regarding data handling practices.

As a member of the budget committee, Balint voiced concern about the potential impacts of proposed tax cuts and emphasized her efforts to protect Social Security from potential budget reductions.

Balint acknowledged that, while some Americans are concerned about broader constitutional issues, many Vermonters she has spoken to are more focused on immediate economic issues such as rising prices and healthcare access.

She encouraged constituents to educate themselves, conduct independent research through credible sources, engage respectfully online, participate civically, and communicate directly with her office about local impacts of federal decisions.
