Armed man arrested after standoff in Peterborough

PETERBOROUGH — A 64-year-old Peterborough man faces multiple felony charges after a standoff with police Tuesday evening that ended with officers using non-lethal force to subdue him.

John Fortin was arrested after police responded to reports of an armed man threatening neighbors on Keenan Drive around 6 p.m. March 18.

Officers established a perimeter around Fortin’s residence and called for mutual aid from surrounding communities.

The New Hampshire State Police SWAT Team began negotiations with Fortin at approximately 11 p.m.

According to police, Fortin approached SWAT members and was struck with a non-lethal round, knocking him to the ground.

When Fortin began fighting with a deployed New Hampshire State Police K9, officers used a Taser to subdue and arrest him.

Fortin was transported to Monadnock Community Hospital and later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for further treatment while remaining in police custody.

He has been charged with four felony counts of criminal threatening with a deadly weapon and is scheduled for arraignment today in the 8th Circuit Court in Jaffrey.

The Peterborough Police Department said additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

Multiple agencies assisted during the incident, including police departments from Antrim, Greenfield, Hillsboro, Jaffrey, Keene, Mont Vernon, New Ipswich and Temple-Greenville, as well as the New Hampshire State Police, Monadnock Regional Special Response Team, Keene SWAT, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and Peterborough Fire & Rescue.
