3 taken into custody after handgun display at Portland mosque

PORTLAND — Portland police responded to the Cumberland Islamic Center at 1844 Forest Avenue for a weapons possession call at 9:09 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses stated that three individuals in a black BMW pulled up to the front entrance of the mosque, with two of the occupants displaying handguns and making threatening remarks toward an individual.

The vehicle was later located by patrol officers at the Maine Muslim Community Center at 118 Anderson Street.

Two juvenile suspects were taken into custody and interviewed by detectives before being released to their parents with charges pending.

A 19-year-old was also taken into custody with charges pending.

No one was injured and no guns have been recovered at this point in the investigation.

Portland Police are encouraging anyone with security camera footage of the incident to contact them.
