Cohoes man arrested after police seize drugs at bottle redemption center

COHOES — Police seized more than 5 ounces of cocaine and a potentially lethal amount of fentanyl during a search of a local bottle redemption center Tuesday.

Members of the Cohoes Police Department executed a search warrant at the Cohoes Bottle and Can Redemption Center at 71 Columbia Street on March 18.

The search yielded 143.9 grams of cocaine, 7.4 grams of fentanyl, packaging materials, a scale and $501 in U.S. currency, according to police.

Sherod E. Cooper, 47, of Cohoes was arrested and faces multiple charges including criminal possession of a controlled substance in the second degree, a Class A II felony.

Cooper was also charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree, and two counts of criminally using drug paraphernalia.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, 2 milligrams of fentanyl is considered a potentially lethal dose.

Following the search, Cohoes Code Enforcement shut down the Columbia Street location.

Cooper, who has 10 previous convictions including two felonies and eight misdemeanors, is being held pending arraignment in Cohoes City Court.
