DOVER — A Massachusetts man died Thursday morning after his SUV struck a stopped dump truck on the Spaulding Turnpike.

The crash occurred at 8:02 a.m. just north of Exit 8 West in Dover.

According to New Hampshire State Police, a 2024 Western Star dump truck driven by Jamie L. Joy, 55, of Pittsfield, was stopped in the right lane due to traffic congestion when it was struck from behind by a 2016 Lincoln Navigator.

The Navigator’s driver, James L. Stammers, 39, of Lynn, Massachusetts, died at the scene from his injuries.

Joy was uninjured in the collision.

Neither vehicle had passengers.

The crash forced the closure of all northbound lanes of the Spaulding Turnpike for approximately three and a half hours, with traffic diverted off Exit 8 West.

All lanes reopened at 11:36 a.m.

Members of the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit and the Unmanned Aerial Systems Unit responded to assist with the investigation.

Dover Police Department, Dover Fire and Rescue, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation also provided assistance at the scene.

All aspects of the crash remain under investigation.
