Scammer poses as deputy sheriff in Cape Cod phone scheme

1 min read

BARNSTABLE — A scammer impersonating a Barnstable County deputy sheriff has targeted at least one local woman, authorities warned Tuesday.

The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Civil Process Division reported that a caller falsely identifying himself as a deputy sheriff contacted a Cape Cod woman on Tuesday, March 5.

The impersonator told the woman he needed her to “sign some important papers,” according to sheriff’s officials.

When the woman attempted to call back the number provided, she reached a voicemail greeting that stated: “You’ve reached the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, warrants and civil divisions, no one is here to answer your call, please leave a message.”

Officials confirmed this is a scam and not a legitimate communication from the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office advised residents to never provide personal identifying information or money to callers, regardless of how official they may sound.
