NEWPORT — The City of Newport has issued a boil water notice for part of the municipal water system due to a water main break on Lake Road.
Officials warn that drinking water may become contaminated on its way to taps, creating a significant health risk. The notice is effective immediately.
Foreman Jason Hermann clarified that the notice applies only to residents who directly received the notification, not the entire city.
“The leak has been repaired and we will be taking the required samples Monday morning to be sent to the lab for testing,” Hermann said. “I expect to have results back by Wednesday at the latest. At that point the boil water order will be lifted.”
Pressure fluctuations in the water system increase the possibility of contamination from coliform bacteria, which can indicate the presence of potentially harmful organisms.
People with compromised immune systems, infants and some elderly residents may face increased risk and should consult healthcare providers about their drinking water.
