LEVANT — A man with nine active warrants was arrested Tuesday evening after fleeing into the woods from Penobscot County deputies in Levant.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said deputy sheriffs identified Joseph Crawford, 24, of Garland, at a local store around 5:51 p.m. on Feb. 27.
The deputy recognized Crawford and was aware that Crawford had nine active warrants for his arrest, in addition to eight active sets of bail conditions.
When the deputy approached to take Crawford into custody, police said Crawford resisted arrest by pulling away and fleeing into a nearby wooded area.
Additional deputies and K9 Memphis were dispatched to the scene to assist in searching for Crawford.
The K9 track eventually led authorities to a residence farther down the road in Levant, where Crawford surrendered peacefully.
Crawford was transported to Penobscot County Jail and booked on his outstanding warrants.
Police said Crawford faces additional charges, including refusing to submit to arrest or detention and violation of conditional release.
