OLEAN — New York State Police officers shot a man early Wednesday after he pointed a handgun at them while they responded to a report of a suicidal person on North 7th Street, authorities said.

Troopers and a sergeant from SP Olean arrived at approximately 12:47 a.m. and found Thomas A. Wright, 23, of Olean, walking along the sidewalk, police said.

When officers attempted to engage with Wright, he pointed a black handgun at them, prompting the three officers to fire their weapons, striking him multiple times, officials said.

Troopers and members of the Olean Police Department provided emergency medical aid.

Wright was taken to Olean General Hospital and later transferred to Erie County Medical Center, where he remains in guarded condition, police said.

Investigators determined Wright was in possession of a BB gun, which was recovered at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation, and charges are pending, authorities said.
