ONEIDA — A judge in Oneida County has unsealed an indictment charging multiple individuals in connection with the December 2024 homicide of an incarcerated man at Marcy Correctional Facility.
Oneida County Court Judge Robert Bauer unsealed the indictment on Feb. 24, following an investigation led by a specially empaneled grand jury into the death of Robert Brooks, 43.
Nicholas J. Kieffer, 33, of Whitesboro, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, second-degree gang assault, and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing.
New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James said the arrest followed extensive investigative work.
State Police launched their investigation on Dec. 10 after being notified of Brooks’ death early that morning.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Troop D, with assistance from multiple specialized units.
The investigation involved more than 400 leads, hundreds of pieces of evidence, and 16 search warrants, police said.
Several other individuals were arrested on Feb. 20 and arraigned in Oneida County Court on charges related to the case.
Those charged include Nicholas J. Anzalone, 44, of Lee Center; David J. Kingsley II, 44, of Adams; Anthony R. Farina, 49, of Oneida; Christopher Walrath, 36, of Little Falls; Mathew J. Galliher, 43, of Clinton; Michael Mashaw, 47, of Boonville; Michael D. Fisher, 54, of Rome; David K. Walters, 36, of Rome; and Nicholas J. Gentile, 36, of New Hartford.
Charges against them range from second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter to gang assault and evidence tampering.
State Police acknowledged the assistance of the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office and Medical Examiner’s Office.
The prosecution remains ongoing.
