BOSTON — Police arrested a 31-year-old man early Monday morning after a foot chase, following an alleged breaking and entering at a commercial property in South Boston.
At about 11:52 p.m. Sunday, officers assigned to District C-6 responded to a commercial alarm at 259 Dorchester St.
When they arrived, they found a shattered side door and multiple cash registers that had been tampered with.
Several cartons of cigarettes were also scattered on the floor.
After reviewing security footage, officers saw a suspect placing cigarette cartons into a green bag.
They broadcast a description of the suspect and began searching the area.
At about 3:11 a.m., officers on patrol near Southampton Street and Massachusetts Avenue spotted a man matching the suspect’s description among a group of people.
When officers approached and mentioned the earlier breaking and entering, the man immediately fled toward Melnea Cass Boulevard.
Officers pursued on foot and apprehended him.
During a search, officers found a green bag containing multiple cartons of cigarettes stolen from 259 Dorchester St.
Brendan Wetherbee, 31, of Boston, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering nighttime for felony.
He is expected to be arraigned in South Boston District Court.
