BINGHAMTON — Scammers posing as sheriff’s detectives and deputies are contacting Broome County residents in an effort to solicit money and gift cards, according to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.
Over the past 24 hours, the sheriff’s office has received several reports from residents who received phone calls from individuals pretending to be law enforcement.
Victims were informed that they had missed court appearances and were threatened with arrest warrants or fines.
During the calls, the scammers claimed to be on a recorded line and instructed victims not to inform anyone.
If the victim remained on the call, the scammers eventually requested payment by credit card or other methods.
Officials are urging residents to not provide credit card information over the phone and to hang up immediately if they receive such a call.
“Don’t be fooled, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office will never ask for credit card information or any form of payment over the phone,” Sheriff Fred Akshar said.
This type of scam has targeted Broome County residents in previous years.
